Minutes Matter: How to Respond to a Gas Leak or Accident
While gas accidents are rare when equipment is handled correctly, knowing how to react can save lives. If you smell gas (a distinct “rotten egg” odor) or suspect a leak, follow this immediate protocol:
-
Stop the Source: If it is safe to do so, turn the cylinder valve to the “Off” position (clockwise).
-
Extinguish All Flames: Immediately put out cigarettes, candles, or pilot lights. Do not use a telephone, flashlight, or electrical switch in the area, as a tiny spark can trigger an explosion.
-
Ventilate Immediately: Open all doors and windows to allow the gas to dissipate into the open air.
-
Evacuate: If the smell persists or you hear a heavy hissing sound, leave the building immediately and keep others away.
-
Call for Help: Once you are at a safe distance, call the Quality Gases emergency line or your local fire department. Do not re-enter the premises until a professional has declared it safe.
